Image(s) of the Night 19-23

Tonight I went for a stroll with two of my friends. We dropped of my one friend's girlfriend at Penn Station and decided to walk back East rather then waste money on the subway. Along our way back I was able to snap off a few images seeing as I had taken my digital camera along with me.

You'll notice something different about these images. That is that they all have people in them. This is certainly not something that occurs often or is seen often in my, so called, ouvre.  My current focus is on everything that is NOT photographic in photography and stripping it of its preconceived notifying photographic indicators. However, everyone in a while I feel compelled to just snap some images.

Midnight Shift - 2012

This image of the construction sight holds significance because immediately following my passing of the site I was asked by one of the workers if there was any way he'd be able to get the/an image(s) that I took. I told him if he supplied his email address then I'd take care of the rest. Later tonight I had the photograph all ready for him and had emailed him a high resolution file that he can use for printing or sending to a lab to order prints if he so chooses.

Untitled - 2012

There's something unsettling about this image. It's the small postcard of the twin towers in the upper left-of-center portion of the frame. It's almost as if it's a constant reminder for the guards on duty. And the only reason I approach this with some reservations is because I don't think we need our security to be constantly feeling a sort of mixture of anger, hatred, and sorrow while they are performing their job as assisting those who need help and simultaneously maintaining a "lookout" and a watchful eye for any unscrupulous behavior. I feel that with all the associated ideas behind 9/11 it might almost increase the tendencies of racial or ethnic profiling amongst public security officers such as the NYPD or even the officers dressed in full camouflage and wielding automatic rifles.

Late Night McDonald's Run...Walk...er...Sit - 2012

Untitled - 2012
Yes, I added a good amount of digital noise to this image. I felt it needed it. There are a good deal of negative undertones within this image and I felt adding grain as a sort of, degradation of the image, of clarity added to the mood.

Never Ending: More Promotional Work

Recently I was asked to assist one of my friends on his short film. I accepted and was given the title of director of photography. The film is currently in its final stages. While I won't say anything about it I'll give you a look at an additional contribution of mine, the promotional poster.

I should mention that this is not the final draft of the poster as it is missing the location of the public screening. This will be taking place in a Brooklyn bar called The Way Station.

New Images from a Recent Roll #2

Here are some recent images (about half that I decided were good enough to scan) that I shot. They're only 35mm Agfa slide film images. There's no real thesis that I had in mind when shooting them. Just the usual whatever interests me type of mentality.
Hope you enjoy.

Sincerely,

-S

Slides from a Recent Roll

As I mentioned earlier I recently purchased and shot my way through a roll of Agfa Digibase CR200 slide film and here are some of the images. Forgive the poor scans, my scanner is seriously on it's last few weeks.
There will be soon to follow a short photo-narrative...whatever you want to call it. It's just a small compiling of the last frames on the roll I shot. It focuses on a single train station in Auberndale, Queens.

Hope you enjoy,

-S.

Image(s) of The Night #12

It's been a weird (rough) day. It started off quite well around five thirty this morning but then began lengthy downhill stumble as the day progressed.  Last night I accompanied a great friend of mine to a new gallery that a mutual friend of ours recently opened up called Open Space Studio and had a wonderful time. If any of you readers are local (Greater NYC area) I strongly recommend you take a trip over to Long Island City (45th st Court House Sq. stop on the 7 train).

With nothing to do tonight I took to the streets with my camera and these are just a few of the resulting images:

P.S. I'm hoping to arrange for a show or to be part of a show at OpenSpace and will keep you all informed as to any possible show dates to look forward to.

P.P.S. I'll probably be going to THIS exhibit tomorrow (Night Vision: Photography After Dark) and I recommend anyone who might be interested...GO! It's bound to be an excellent display of night photography.

City Storms (I'll take the rain)

On Sunday, August fourteenth New York City received quite a storm beginning in it's evening hours and extending through three in the morning.  I found myself out and about with my Chaika in hand when the torrential downpour began.  I decided to seek shelter underneath some scaffolding and wait it out. After several hours spent standing in, more or less, the same spot watching the evening progress I found myself becoming rather, poetic. This was the result:

Sincerely,

I like how you can see more information about what's going on in the first image but I enjoy the 'feel' of the second image.

Hicksville Long Island by Night

Last weekend while I was leaving Hicksville I wanted to take the bus back to Flushing, Queens but learned that they don't run much later than about 9 PM. Needless to say I was disappointed but as always plan B was to take the LIRR back into the city and then walk home.  I guess I should be grateful seeing as I was still trying to make my way through a stash of twenty year old Kodak 800 speed film.  I was able to capture a few images that I like. They display an aspect of timelessness because there is no specific content which determines a specific time period. However, at the same time they carry a feel of time that's since passed. Anyway, I like them and I hope you find something enjoyable about them as well.

Best,

-S.

P.S. My favorites are the second and third one down.

P.P.S - The immense amount of grain is due to the film being long since expired as well as varying amounts of under exposure.

New York of Another Time

I've been strolling around with my trusty 35mm rangefinder as I've been making my way through a small stash of 20 year old Kodak 800 speed film. Here are a few shots from my travels.
Although I recognize Fuji color films as being superior to Kodak films in every aspect, (color rendition, grain, spectral sensitivity latitude) I think I like the palette of colors created by Kodak film, at least for street photography. Different films for different uses I suppose. Kodak film (now remember the expiration dat for this film was marked 1990) seems to give warmer results that dare I say it, appear more retro or vintage. Just something I've experienced.

Best,

-S.

I can't tell you how tempted I am to ask the owner of that garage how much he'd take for that beautiful ol' Cadillac and in what sort of condition it's in. One day i'll have a nice old car like that. Nothing too fancy or flashy. Just something that's been used that I'll buy for cheap and invest some time and money into in order to fix it up and have it run like new.

Image of the Night #4 - Cosmos Diner

My favorite diner in Manhattan, Cosmos Diner. It's got its ups and its down just like every other diner but we love them all anyway. They're open 24 hours, they're convenient, and they connect us to some former Americana US history that I love so much.  I'll be speaking to my friend who works there named Steve to see if he'd be interested in displaying a signed, matted copy of this image in Cosmos. I've got to speak with him before the end of next week as he'll be vacationing to Greece soon.

Best,

-S.

UPDATE: (March 3rd, 2012)- Cosmo's diner has apparently changed management and now is known as Orion Dinner and Grill. It's much flashier than before and I've not yet tried their food.

A Sort of 'London-ish' Day

Been taking a lot of walks lately and today's stood out quite a bit. Not only was I displeased to find that the weather had taken a dive a bit, returning to it's former cold, wet former self, but the light was as flat as it could be.  It was a very 'London-ish' day in my opinion. The sun was being triply diffused through thick translucent layers of clouds. So, my challenge was to see how I could take such seemingly dull and uninteresting light and create some decent images.  The result: several images who's color stands out (as it tends to on most overcast days) but ultimately have a cold, 'hyper clean' feel to them. It was surprisingly enjoyable to walk around even with the weather being so sup-par.  During a second round walk to my friend Wyeth's apartment I stumbled upon yet another local NYC nuclear fallout shelter. What luck!

-Hope you enjoy these.

Sincerely,

-S.

Recent Images from a Rainy Day

It's been raining a lot up here in New York City and today there was finally that brief pause, that short repose between drizzles where the light is gorgeous. You can't find it anywhere else or at any other time.
Here are a few images I snapped while out on a very short walk before needing to find shelter again.

Hope all who shared the weather with me were able to get out and appreciate the day somehow.

Sincerely,

-S
